The substantial data generated by NIDA-funded studies of the effects of addictive substances and HIV, and their interaction on nervous system function provide a valuable resource that can be integrated, mined and analyzed using big data science to elucidate the mechanisms underlying these complex interactions that have cognitive and behavioral consequences. It is often comorbid with HIV and this coexistence can interact at several levels to produce neurocognitive deficits dysfunction and promote risky behaviors. Drug addiction is a complex neuroadaptive process that begins with molecular and epigenetic events that are amplified to cellular, circuit, and network changes that govern cognition and behavior.
